This briefing aims to improve your professional knowledge and understanding of sustainability planning for digital projects and will encourage delegates to consider in more depth the range of business strategies open to the digital project. Recommendations are taken from recent, ground-breaking research which offers an insight into real world case studies with financial measurements in order to inform strategic planning.

These workshops also offer delegates the opportunity to make the most out of their collections and archives using a range of free tools and digital strategies created by the Strategic Content Alliance. This range of workshops and briefings will demonstrate how to harness copyright law, 21st century business models and cutting edge technology and techniques.

Who should attend?

The workshops are aimed primarily at delegates from universities, archives, museums, health, public service broadcasting, schools and cultural heritage. No particular technical knowledge is required as a prerequisite.

Why think about business models or sustainability?

Those involved in the creation or curation of digital content during the economic downturn will need to consider ways to strengthen the long-term prospects for non-profit digital resources so that the greatest impact possible can be leveraged through the ‘public purse’. In this way, these issues are of great importance to funders and grant recipients alike.

Topics covered will include:

• Recommendations on maximising access and removing barriers to your content through SCA digital strategies

• Frameworks for thinking about sustainability

• Examples of financial models that digital projects could pursue

• International “real world” case studies which explore how other public-sector organisations address the issue of sustainability

• An outline of future work in this area

During the workshop, attendees will have:

• Had the opportunity to de-mystify possible business models

• Discussed sustainability planning

• Seen how a selection of revenue models have been employed

• Been given examples in order to evaluate the potential for their own organisation
