Stuart Dempster

Stuart DempsterStuart Dempster has been working with, on and around digital content, the internet and world wide web since the mid nineties. He set up United News and Media’s first digital picture library systems and oversaw the introduction of digital photography into editorial systems at Express Newspapers. He moved to the Wellcome Library to project manage the implementation of new library systems and the digitisation of the entire Wellcome image library before moving onto JISC. Here he devised and developed the first two digitisation programmes, totalling £22million investment before taking up his role as Director of the Strategic Content Alliance where he has responsibility for a broad range of current and future technology policy, strategy and skills issues affecting digital content in the arts, education, research and cultural organisations. He works closely with Arts Council England, BBC, British Library, Heritage Lottery Fund and Wellcome Library to foster innovative partnerships in the development of Digital Content. He leads work on emergent internet business models, IP and licencing and audience development or as one colleague once called it “all the boring (but necessary) stuff”. He sits on a number of advisory committees, steering groups and boards. He lives in London, but travels extensively around the UK and overseas. He is often invited to speak at digital conferences. He tends to avoid being part of the Twitterarti, but admits to using LinkedIn for professional contacts.

Sarah Fahmy

Sarah FahmySarah Fahmy, has worked with the creation and management of digital content since 2004 within an education and arts sector and currently manages the Strategic Content Alliance initiative, where she is involved in a broad range of current and future technology policy, strategy and skills issues affecting digital content in the arts, education, research and cultural organisations. She works closely with Arts Council England, BBC, British Library, Heritage Lottery Fund and Wellcome Library to foster innovative partnerships in the development of digital content. She has considerable knowledge of and expertise in emergent interest business models, IP and rights management and online audience engagement and is often asked to present at a number of UK and international conference in this capacity. She oversees and supports a variety of projects in various collaborative activities aimed at reducing the technical, political and administrative barriers that impede access to and use of publicly funded digital content. Her work includes innovation programmes covering the JISC’s contribution to the First World War Centenary and the Chronicle project, which aims to ‘open up’ the BBC Northern Ireland archives from the sixties and seventies. Sarah also sits on a range of advisory panels and steering groups.
Sarah previously worked on a Becta-funded programme at JISC Collections to collectively license a range of commercial resources enabling schools across the UK to benefit from large discounts through joint purchase. Prior to that, she worked at the Tate Gallery and HarperCollins publishers in the licensing of collections and content. Sarah’s has also taught English to speakers of other languages for three years and lives in Kent.
